absolute URL -
An absolute URL is one which contains the complete file path to the object you are linking to, be it an image, video, or another web page.
browser -
A program used for accessing websites or information on the internet.
content -
The information that fills webpages. It can be pictures, video, text or other forms.
CSS -
Cascading Style Sheets, is a language used for website creatation, that helps control the design aspects of the site.
<div> -
Used to section off a portion of a web page. No meaning other than to section off a group of elements that fall within it.
domain name -
The unique name of a website that is used to identify it on the internet.
<font> -
Used to specifiy font features, such as color, face, and size. HTML tag used in place of CSS to control font.
FTP -
File transfer protocol, is a means of moving files from one computer to another.
homepage -
The first page that appears when you enter a website's URL. This is the main page for the site, and usually ends in index.html.
HTML -
Hypertext markup language, is the language that websites are written in.
index.html -
This is the main page of a website. It is usually the homepage, and is the base of a website, which all the other pages are connected to.
Internet -
A network of computers and servers across the world which use TCP/IP to transfer data to one another.
link -
A clickable portion of a web page, usually text, that will take you to another part of the site, web page, or to another website all together.
meta tag -
An element of HTML which although not seen when a webpage is visited, gives the browser information about the web page.
network neutrality -
A principle that proposes freedom of content for the Web. It is an opposition to restrictions of any kind on the development of the Web, be they content, site, or means of communication.
relative URL -
A relative URL points to a file or directory in relation to the present file or directory. It is not the complete url, it contains a shortcut instead of the full file path.
Tim Berners-Lee -
A British computer scientist and engineer who developed many technologies such as http, the web browser, the URL, as well as creating the World Wide Web.
URL -
Uniform resource locator, is the address of a webpage.
W3C -
World Wide Web Consortium, the main international organization which is in charge of standards and rules for web development.
WWW -
World Wide Web, is the collection of websites contained on the internet.
